With the Kindle series of e-readers, Amazon has really made reading easy and fun for people of all age groups. Unlike other e-readers, Kindle devices come with a glare free light enabling the users to read their favorite book anytime anywhere without distracting others around. The Kindle e – reader we are reviewing today is the Kindle Voyage.

Overall Rating
Product Features

All the Kindle models, promote easy reading which don’t tire the eyes due to their glare free reading and low weight. Kindle Voyage goes one step further in reducing the weight on your arms as it is only 7.6 mm and therefore users can hold the device for longer without putting stress on the arms.

Kindle devices are known to provide glare free reading and unlike most e – readers, on the kindle devices, it is possible to read without exerting your eyes, even under direct sunlight. Voyage comes with the latest available resolution of 300 ppi (pixels per inch which determines the image quality in an electronic device; same as the Oasis), which ensures crisp, laser quality text akin to a printed page.

Kindle Voyage boasts of adaptive reading light, a feature not present in any of the other Kindle devices. With an adaptive front light, voyage senses the light in your environment and changes the settings to ideal brightness (much like the auto brightness feature in smart phones). Therefore, Voyage enables smooth reading irrespective of bright sunlight or total darkness. The automatically adjusted brightness can further be fine tuned as per personal preferences. When reading in the dark, the adaptive front light (light sensors) slowly lowers the display’s brightness over time to match the way the eye responds to darkness.

Kindle Voyage offers the option to turn the page with either the touch display (as also found in all other Kindles), or use the PagePress option (exclusive to Voyage). This option allows the reader to turn the page without lifting a finger, simply by putting pressure on the bezel to turn the page and page press provides a silent haptic response for consistent and immediate page turning. These PagePress sensors are located on the front side of the reading device, both at its left and right. It is a custom designed force sensor made of carbon and silver and reacts to even the slightest of pressure, thereby, triggering a page turn and the resultant haptic response can only be sensed by the thumb. The PagePress has no moving parts, and thus, the haptics provide the most minimal indication of the buttons being pressed in order to reduce any distraction from reading.

Kindle Voyage has all the features of a modern e-reader. With Page Flip feature, readers can skim page by page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end for a sneak peak all without losing the reading page. Adding margin notes to be edited or shared later, highlighting portions of the text or meaningful quotes is super easy and sharing them on online media is even easier.

Up to 8 text sizes are available on this device to help you choose the best suitable size for yourself, thereby preventing tired eyes and helping the user read longer. It is also very easy to make different folders for the books on your kindle, thereby categorizing them to locate them easily. One of the best features is the Time to Read feature which allows the user to see how much time is left to reach the book or a chapter and also shows the percentage of book complete. The Time to Read is customized based on the reader’s speed. With Bing Translator, one can easily translate any word or highlighted section into another language.

With in-built Vocabulary features like the Smart Lookup, all you have to do is long press on the word or phrase and you will have the option to know the word’s meaning, learn more about it via Wikipedia and even look up the word in the thesaurus, all while staying on the current page. What’s more? Every word you select gets saved in the device’s dictionary, thereby saving it for memory. The X-ray feature, exclusive to kindle e-readers, allows the users to scan through all the passages in the book which mention relevant ideas, characters, etc. The Whisper sync technology allows the user to automatically save and synchronize the furthest read page, bookmarks, notes and highlights across all devices where you are using kindle app. This implies that the user can start reading a book on one device and continue it on another from the same page.

Kindle Voyage is available in two connectivity modes, much like its previous models: WIFI or WIFI plus 3G. It is also completely wireless much like the previous versions and does not require a computer to download content. The on – device storage is 4 GB (translates to roughly 1100 books) and comes with free cloud storage for all Amazon content.

The Kindle Voyage is 7.6mm thin and is easy to use. It was designed to come one step closer to paper which explains its thickness, or we should rather say, thinness. It has a flush – front bezel for a clean look and streamlined design. It has a magnesium back and specially reinforced glass front, and overall looks very sleek plus is also super durable. The PagePress buttons are conveniently located on the front sides. The on/off button is placed on the top back, and is easy to access and use. The matte finish ensures high satisfaction while reading.

Display size of Voyage is 6 inch. The dimensions are 162 * 115 * 7.6 mm. The weight for the WIFI only model is 180 g and for the WIFI + 3G model is 188 g. The only other Kindle that weighs less than this device is the Oasis. The 3G model is best when you are often on the move or don’t have access to a stable WIFI connection. Amazon pays for the Kindle’s 3G connectivity, making a purchase of this model highly enticing.

Kindle Voyage has an exclusive Origami cover which not only protects the device from damage and scratches, but also allows one to read in the portrait format in hands free mode. The magnetized origami cover keeps the Voyage securely uptight. These well fitting covers are designed by Amazon to provide full front and back protection. Closing the case puts the Voyage to sleep. The integrated magnetic closure will ensure that the case stays shut in a backpack, purse or briefcase. This Origami cover will however have to be bought separately. The device comes with a USB 2.0 charging cable and a Quick Start guide. A Kindle Voyage User’s guide PDF is pre installed on the device.

Kindle Voyage, offers the experience of reading as if from a book. The texts read like printed pages with all fonts being hand tuned at the pixel level. The display on the Voyage is sharp and crystal clear. First time Kindle Users do not need any assistance in setting up or using the device. It is extremely easy to navigate around the various settings and in built buttons. Several book formats can be read on the Kindle, some after converting them to the readable formats. Battery life on an average lasts about three weeks.

PagePress buttons are available on both the sides with both forward and backward options, so easier to operate even with a single hand. The adaptive light sensor works well. Voyage also has a nightlight feature which is turned off by default and when enabled it gradually reduces the screen brightness over time to adjust to the dark.

With the option of choosing different text sizes and fonts, it is very easy for everyone to enjoy the text without straining the eyes. On the Voyage, a single battery charge lasts up to six weeks (based on half an hour per day reading with WIFI off); this translates to roughly 2 weeks of charge if you read more than a few hours every day with WIFI on. The device completely charges in about 3 hours time when connected to a computer via USB cable.

Compared to the earlier models, it is easier to hold Voyage with one hand without causing much discomfort even for longer hours. It is also very light to carry. The device has a very nice feel overall. But the back is more prone to smudges than the previous models. In terms of text display, Voyage beats the earlier models hands down, thanks to its crispier display.

Service and Support

The quality of servicing offered post purchase is not very good, especially in smaller towns. In fact, since the Kindle is available only online and not with offline retailers, users can find themselves in a loop if and when the device malfunctions.

Voyage has the same battery life as the previous devices, that is, battery lasts for several weeks on one charge based on the usage. With an inbuilt Good reads app, it is very convenient to connect with friends and family and stay in touch with what they are reading. Users can also follow authors and popular figures to know about their latest books or recommendations.

Imagine having access to thousands of titles, fiction or non-fiction, for you, your parents and your kids all at just the touch of a button? Kindle gives you this experience. Just buy the Voyage and you have access to 30,000 plus free e-books available as per your convenience. All you need is a working network connection for it. And once you are a Kindle owner, you can even opt for a Kindle Unlimited membership wherein you have to pay a small amount, for free and discounted access to millions of books. Another major advantage of reading using the Kindle is that most of the books available for Kindle come at a spectacularly low or discounted price, thus helping the user in saving a lot more as compared to reading and / or buying physical books.

Kindle makes reading a joy for young children with its various features like Vocabulary Builder, which stores all new words and can be accessed as per convenience. Kindle Text Pop for children’s books and Kindle Panel View for comic books, ensures a fun reading experience for the tiny tots.

The Voyage offers similar performance like the earlier models but price wise is a better option than the later model, Oasis. However, the battery life and storage are the same as previous models. The PagePress feature which is one of the reasons behind Voyage being differently priced than Paperwhite, is actually not an essential function, as anyone used to the Kindle or even new readers, will not have a problem in touching the screen to change pages.

Given the fact that not much has changed in this device compared to the previous models (only two new features: Adaptive light and Page Press), one does wonder if the pricing is worth it, especially with a newer model (Oasis) available now. The Origami cover advertised on the website and listed as a feature of the Voyage reader, does not come along with it and has to be bought separately.

The reading technology used in Kindles is still e-ink technology. Compared to LCD reading technology, e-ink has its own share of disadvantages. Further, e – ink is a monochrome platform.

Kindle Voyage comes with a limited warranty for 1 year provided by the manufacturer. With all its features, Kindle Voyage can be labeled as a balanced choice among the range of Kindle devices. It is to be bought by those who want to flaunt a little but still don’t want to pay the hefty price associated with the Oasis; however, at the same time, don’t want to go for lower end models. If price is a criteria, users can easily opt for the Paperwhite with almost the same features. Otherwise, Voyage is of course an excellent choice.

The Kindle Voyage can be given a rating of 8 on 10.
