The TH-42A400D is Panasonic’s offering for the cost conscious consumer. It is a modern looking TV with mediocre picture and sound quality, average video/ motion processing and not much else.
The same TV comes in 42 inch as well 'TH-42A400D' and apart from the screen size there is no difference in features at all. So if you are looking for one of the cheapest 40 and 42 inch LED TV’s with a 1080P resolution in the market and all you plan to do is view cable TV on standard or high definition, then the TH-42A400D is a safe bet.
While the picture quality on the TH-42A400D does not blow you away, it is acceptable for its price. You may need to tweak the out of the box settings to get the most out of the display. After some manipulation of the settings, we were able to get the colors to render vividly on the screen and minimize (but not eliminate) the heaviness in the color contrasts that seems to be inbuilt in this TV. The A400D offers a choice of 5 different picture modes - dynamic, normal, cinema, true cinema and game. Choosing these settings based on the brightness in your room and the content you wish to watch is a good idea if you want the best display quality that this TV has to offer. However we did find the TV had problems at times with quick motion sequences. While viewing the movie Bang Bang we found that fast action scenes do not render as smoothly as we would have liked on this TV in spite of choosing the "True Cinema" or "cinema" setting in a pitch dark room. Picture clarity at extreme viewing angles also is quite diminished but this will probably be a problem with most LED LCD TV's at this price range.
The speaker output of the Panasonic TH-42A400D is 20W (10W x2 speakers) which is common for an entry level TV. The audio quality is average at best. Bass is almost non-existent and the sound is prone to mild distortions at times.
Input and Output
This Panasonic offers just 2 HDMI ports and 1 USB 2.0 port - just the bare minimum needed in a TV in 2014. Other than that it does not offer much else
The TH-42A400D is a modern looking TV with a thin bezel frame. The TV panel itself is quite thick and may not be a great candidate for mounting on the wall. The black stand seems sturdy enough and lends it a contemporary look and feel.
The 42A400D in our opinion is good value for money. In 2014, it is almost impossible to buy a 42 inch name branded TV at this price. If you are in the market for an inexpensive TV and do not require the latest features offered by the more expensive Smart TV's or 3d TV's, the A400D might just be the TV that satisfies your needs!
