Fortified Water - Bottled with vitamins and minerals

Fortified water as a drink has been there for a while now and market forecasters see a booming future for this category globally, pointing to factors such as growing urbanisation and greater health consciousness. Marketed as a ‘health’ drink, it proffers consumers an alternative to carbonated or artificially flavoured drinks. often boasting of lower calorie content than carbonated drinks but offering more taste appeal than plain water, fortified water is an attractive proposition to many consumers. of course, ‘health’ or ‘natural’ claims are grey territory. sometimes brands claim to have more of a particular ingredient so as to be one up on competitors. so, while they may taste good, watch out for unsubstantiated claims on the labels. the following report assesses four brands of fortified water on essential attributes, including important vitamins and electrolytes that they are expected to contain.

What is water fortified with, one may ask. Well, it may be vitamins, minerals and fruit juices, to begin with. A small but rising number of flavoured waters also provide added value through the inclusion of herbs. Fortified water is commonly preferred by those who want to drink their supplements and also by those who drink water during workouts and want a little more flavour than that provided by plain water.

It may be noted that some of the tested brands have not claimed to have electrolytes like sodium and potassium, while some others do not claim to have some of the vitamins. In fact, only one brand claimed to have calcium. Testing was not done where there was no claim for an ingredient.

Fortified water is not to be confused with sports drinks or glucose-electrolyte solutions, which have more carbohydrate energy and higher amounts of electrolytes.

Why We Need Electrolytes

Water deficit in the body leads to dehydration and along with it, loss of electrolytes and ions, which can interfere with normal body processes. Electrolytes are minerals in our body that have an electric charge. They are in our blood, urine and body fluids. Maintaining the right balance of electrolytes helps our body’s blood chemistry, muscle action and other processes. Sodium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, phosphate and magnesium are all electrolytes. We get them from the foods we eat and the fluids we drink.

Levels of electrolytes in our body can become too low or too high. That can happen when the amount of water in our body changes, causing dehydration or over-hydration. Causes include some medicines, vomiting, diarrhoea, sweating or kidney problems. Problems most often occur with levels of sodium, potassium or calcium.

Beverages that are fortified with electrolytes can help prevent and also treat dehydration. When you exercise, consuming such drinks helps in delaying fatigue and helps to replenish those electrolytes lost during physical activity.
